... That brings us to an important part of Infinite Way meditation. You have read in the writings that I have said that we never give a treatment

anybody. We never project our thought out into the consciousness of a patient or student. We never direct our thought at them. We never

use

words like “you:” you are spiritual,” or “you are perfect,” or “you are God-being,” or “you are under the law of God,” because that would be

directing thought into the mentality of

you

, and that we never do. We never give “you” a treatment; we never give your cat or your dog or your

bird or your crops a treatment. Never do we direct thought “out there.” You must understand this, because it is one of the most important points

in Infinite Way practice.

... Now remember, we do not say that there are not people healed through suggestion, for there are. We do not say that their aren’t people

healed through mental sciences, for there are. What we’re say is that is no part of Infinite Way practice, and I want you to see why. You see,

the

human mind can be used for good and for evil, and the human mind can make honest mistakes. Therefore, we do not want the human mind

enter into our practice or our relationship with our students. Therefore, in our meditation, the “I” that is Joel must cease to function, because

not

only you must not want anything of Joel, but Joel has no right to believe that he has the power to give you anything; because if he had,

where

does God come in?

... In seeking health, sometimes when you expect to get rid of one physical condition, you might discover, now, that you have three or four

others along with that one! They have been latent in your body, or mind, and now this stirs them up, and you all of a sudden discover [them].

You might at first think that your spiritual study caused it! No. Your spiritual study will bring to the surface anything latent in the mind or body;

and the right attitude is to be grateful, because otherwise it would lie dormant there until it got ready to strike. Whereas, now at least, it has

come to the surface, and through your studies and work, you have the opportunity of making a transition from a material sense of health to the

spiritual consciousness of wholeness.

Personalization is like a narrow, leaking pipeline. The fulness of God’s grace could not possibly flow through a five-inch hose, could it? All

of Niagra Falls couldn’t get into a five-inch hose [to] flow through it. That’s just a poor similie for [the truth that] behind us is the infinitude of God’

s grace, willing to pour itself through as long as we do not limit it in any direction. The minute we have a concept of how something should be

done, or how it should go, we’ve limited God’s grace. That is an error in our supposition, our thinking.

... We can say that “faith” - we can exchange that word, if we want to, for “spiritual discernment.” In that spiritual discernment, it isn’t blind

belief,

it isn’t a blind faith, it is an awareness of yourself AS consciousness and yourself as the One Consciousness. “In my conscious oneness

with

God, I am one with all spiritual being and idea.” What does that mean? The spiritual idea of abundance, the spiritual idea of harmony and

wholeness and completeness, peace, joy, and harmony; you are one with all the spiritual treasures.

What stands in the way? What makes personalization? Personalization is our belief system, our belief in good and our belief in evil. So, we

must

be divested of this belief system to be a clear transparency for God’s grace. Our part of being free from this is our living in the now

moment and

watching what comes up into our mind, our thinking, and recognizing, “Here, again, is spiritual power;” your spiritual discernment

recognizing

what voice is speaking. We can say that, like the radio or television, we have maybe Station 1 and Station 2. On Station 1, there is

only One

broadcasting, and that is God broadcasting oneness. Station 2, we have both good and evil being broadcast, a relative sense of

good and a

relative sense of evil, all based upon “judging after the flesh.” We have to recognize these suggestions that come into our

awareness, and ask

ourselves, “Who’s speaking, now? Which one is speaking? Is it Station 2 or Station 1

Chapter 5: “The Second Day: Spiritual Discernment”

The spiritual meaning of the word

firmament

is expansion. Our creative meditations are no longer “without form and void.” We are aware of

increased alertness, new strength and vigor, keener perception of any interior movement in Consciousness. We are gaining a firm

understanding of the difference between

above

and

below

within

and

without

. We begin to understand the statement, “ ... the kingdom of God

within you” [Luke 17:21]: not within the body but within our awareness, for the finite can never contain the infinite. We call this expansion of

awareness

spiritual discernment

, the dividing line between the realized Truth and the letter of truth.

The “waters below” is the pondering of the letter of truth to purify and expand our limited mentality. The “waters above” is the spontaneous and

inspirational Word that utters Itself. This is the water that Jesus referred to when he said, “... whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give

him

shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14]

Now that we are aware of spiritual discernment, we can be “in the world but not of it.” We can enter the mental realm and utilize the mind, which

is a beautiful instrument for this world’s needs. But we must stay awake and refrain from judging by appearances, for underlying any

appearance is the spiritual Reality awaiting our recognition. We must make constant adjustments within ourselves, letting go of misconceptions,

rejecting all beliefs in a power and presence apart from God. In this way the spiritual sense of earth and its infinite manifestations is recognized

and rightly identified and becomes more real to us.

With even a measure of spiritual discernment, we have a choice. As we look with our expanded awareness of Spirit and Its formations, we see

that we have been classifying everyone and everything as attached to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now we can consciously

choose to break this attachment by realizing:

I choose to see this world differently. I choose to see only God and His infinite manifestations. I choose to see everyone as attached to

the Tree

of Life, fed by His love, walking in the Light.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Ye are the salt of the earth ...”, [Matthew 5:13] inferring that those who know the truth are a purifying influence to

all

mankind. Reinterpretation acts as the “salt,” the purifying agent that rules out of human consciousness universal false beliefs. ...

You will remember that our very first Infinite Way principle is that God constitutes individual being. This means God constitutes your

being,

God manifests as your life, your mind, your spirit, your soul, and “even your body is the temple of God.” This is the spiritual truth about

you.

Now, as you accept this, this makes you a law unto your life’s demonstration. In other words, God has given man dominion over

everything. God,

in giving you His mind, God, in giving you His life, soul, spirit, God, in giving you His intelligence, has given you dominion over

ignorance,

superstition, darkness, falseness; and this dominion is your spiritual birthright. Now, the reason we are human beings is that we

have forfeited

this birthright of dominion and turned it over to the world, what the Master called ‘this world,’ to use against us. I have told you

that the basis of

our healing work was the discovery of how error operates in our experience, and now I can explain that to you.

All error, regardless of its name or nature, whether it comes in the form of a sinful desire, a false appetite, a disease, unemployment, any of

the

world’s discords and inharmonies, comes to us in the form of, well the correct term is “a mental malpractice,” actually, an imposed mental

force

from outside. It is not your doings or mine, except for the basic fault that we have surrendered our dominion. ... Having done that, the rest

of the

reason for our discord is not that we are evil but that we continually accept evil from the world. Let us put it this way: the very moment

that the

newspaper or radio announces the coming of an epidemic, at that very instant, the human world opens itself to the epidemic. It just lets

it come

by means of that mentally imposed suggestion from outside. Now, nobody started the rumor just to make you sick, but there it is. It is in

consciousness, and it is thrust at you, and without knowing the basic truth of being, you feel, “Well, what can I do about it? I am a statistic

anyhow. So, if 40 out of 100 get it, I may be one of the 40.” Then you wait around to see. If you’re not, you’re just “lucky.” Actually, you are

responsible for it only because you did not know how to avoid it; you did not know the truth of Being; you did not know what caused it or how to

prevent it. To the pure, all things are pure. In other words, if there is nothing in your consciousness to respond to evil, no evil can take root

there. How do you make yourself free from evil? Only in one way: live, and move, and have your being in the realization of God as constituting

your consciousness, your mind, your soul, and your being, ... and then you will know that ‘nothing can enter that defileth or maketh a lie.

Recognize, then, that regardless of these superstitions or rumors or reports about weather or climate, or about health or infections or

contagions or epidemics, hold to it that those are nothing but imposed mental suggestions, and you are not subject to them, because they are

not power. ... Carnal mind or mortal mind means only a belief in two powers. A universal belief: not a personal one, not your belief, not my

belief,

not his belief, not her belief; an impersonal, universal belief. Then you can laugh at it, the same you would if someone told you, ‘Oh,

there’s a

man down here that is going to

think

you to death. You know they couldn’t, because you know that God is your life, and nobody can

think

God

away.

... Joel’s definition of the Infinite Way, really, it’s just two components, so simple: “my kingdom,” knowing the nature of God, and “this

world,” which is hypnotism. Now, what is hypnotism? It is taking something that you know and giving it power. When you think of a hypnotist,

they

cannot make somebody do anything that they are not already familiar with doing. In other words, a hypnotist can’t make a person fly. A

hypnotist

cannot make a person do something that somewhere deep in their own character, in their own psyche, they wouldn’t do. So, behind

this

hypnotism lies a reality; but the reality is so covered by the imposition of this other mentality, the hypnotist, that we are unaware of the

reality

behind, and we are basically unaware of our actions when we are hypnotized. We don’t know what we are doing; we are in a state of

ignorance.

Joel uses so many examples, the “white poodle” example of hypnotism.

... Joel said, ... “You’ve never seen ME; I’ve never seen YOU, unless I see you with my spiritual vision, with this spiritual discernment.” In the

book, SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT, if one develops or has spiritual discernment, they have a healing consciousness, because that’s all healing

is discerning the spiritual Reality where the illusion, the hypnotic sense appears. There’s nothing to DO in that, and that is one of the great

freedoms of Infinite Way teaching ... .

It all comes down to realizing spiritual identity. ... We have to know who we are, that God is our Father, God is our Source, the Cause of

everything in the universe, the one and only Power, the one and only

; and that’s the I that

am. That’s the

that you are. We use that word “I”.

You

can’t really stop using the word “I”. But you can remember, and that would be enough practice to carry you into the Kingdom. Every time

you said “I”, if

you remembered what that “I” is, you’d be having meditation a hundred times a day, at least. That would be a meditation. Every

time you say the word

“I”, you remember who that “I” is: not this human sense of “I” that has nothing to it but humanhood and good and evil.

That isn’t the

, that isn’t who you

are. It’s a very bad “snapshot” of you. That is one of the best ways I know to practice spiritual identity.
